An Osprey, fishing for Trout at Millrace Park
Experiences a Surprise Ending to its Successful Catch!
An Osprey visits the pond on a cloudy day...
The bird watches my camera with fierce eyes...
The Osprey makes a false pass at a fish...
This time the bird has a Trout in its radar...
The bird accelerates in its vertical plunge...
The Osprey literally power dives into the pond, with only its wingtips showing!
The bird emerges, facing away from the camera...
All that is observed here takes place in seconds...
The bird is now prepared to take flight, holding a submerged fish in its talons
Motion of wings and tail gives the bird upward thrust...
The fish, a sizeable trout, is easily observed here...
The Osprey is now in freeflight...
Gaining altitude to take its prize to some distant location...
The bird, with prey, circles and comes directly over my head, but it is acting strangely.
The Osprey hovers, it appears to be surprised/frightened, and well it should! Out of my range of vision, a Redtailed Hawk is closing in to steal its prize! The birds collide and I missed the action briefly, since it was a total surprise to me, looking through my camera!
Here, the hawk, smaller than the Osprey, struggles to steal the fish, just before they disappeared behind a cluster of trees a considerable distance away.
What a remarkable surprise to me!
